How to Aim Your Headlights After Installation
Use the Wall-Aiming Method for Accurate Headlight Alignment
Aiming your headlights after installation is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps of any headlight upgrade. Incorrectly aimed headlights reduce your visibility, can blind oncoming drivers, and may fail a vehicle inspection.
The good news: it takes about 10 minutes and requires nothing more than chalk or tape, a level, and a flat wall.
What You Need
- A flat, level surface to park on
- A flat vertical wall with at least 7.62 meters (25 feet) of clear space
- Chalk, tape, or a marker
- A straight edge and level
- A screwdriver for the adjustment screws
Step-by-Step Aiming Instructions
Step 1 — Park Close to the Wall
Park your vehicle on a flat surface, close to a wall, with at least 7.62 meters (25 feet) of open space behind you.
Step 2 — Mark Your Y-Axis Lines
On the wall, draw a vertical line from the ground up to the approximate center height of each headlight. You should have two vertical lines — one for the left headlight, one for the right.
These are your Y-axis lines.
Step 3 — Mark Your X-Axis Line
Connect the two vertical center points with a horizontal line across the wall. Use a straight edge and level to make sure it's perfectly straight.
Then extend each vertical Y-axis line upward approximately 3 feet above the horizontal line.
Your wall should now look like two crosses — one for each headlight.
Step 4 — Move the Vehicle Back
Reverse the vehicle in a straight line until the front of the headlights are exactly 7.62 meters (25 feet) from the wall.
Step 5 — Turn On the Headlights
Switch on your headlights on low beam and observe where the beam hits the wall.
Look for the Alignment Point — this is the kink or angle in the beam's cutoff line. It should sit centered on the intersection of the X and Y axis lines you drew.
| Alignment Point Position | Action Required |
|---|---|
| Centered on the intersection | ✅ Correctly aimed — no adjustment needed |
| Above the intersection | ⬇️ Too high — adjust down |
| Below the intersection | ⬆️ Too low — adjust up |
| Left or right of the intersection | ↔️ Horizontal adjustment needed |
Step 6 — Adjust Until Correctly Positioned
Using your vehicle's headlight adjustment screws:
- Adjust vertically first (X-axis) until the Alignment Point lines up with the horizontal line
- Adjust horizontally second (Y-axis) until the Alignment Point lines up with the vertical line
- Repeat the process for the other headlight
- Re-check both headlights after adjusting — adjusting one can sometimes affect the other
💡 Tip: Make small adjustments and re-check after each one. It is easier to dial in the aim gradually than to overshoot and start over.
⚠️ Jeep Wrangler Owners
Jeep Wranglers have a vertical adjustment screw only. Horizontal adjustment is not possible through the standard headlight bucket.
If your Jeep headlights need horizontal adjustment, consult your authorized J.W. Speaker dealer for assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to aim both headlights? Yes — always aim both headlights individually. Even if one seems correct, re-check it after adjusting the other.
Should I aim on low beam or high beam? Always aim on low beam. High beam pattern follows from the low beam aim.
How often should I re-aim my headlights? Re-aiming is recommended after any headlight installation, after a significant impact or collision, or if you notice the beam pattern has shifted during normal use.
My Jeep headlights are aimed too far left or right — what do I do? Contact your authorized J.W. Speaker dealer. Jeep Wranglers do not have a horizontal adjustment screw, so dealer-level support is required for horizontal correction.
