How to Aim a Motorcycle Headlight After Installation

Aim at 25 Feet — Cutoff Line Should Be At or Below the Headlight Center Height

Proper headlight aiming is essential after installing any new motorcycle headlight. Incorrect aim can reduce your visibility, blind oncoming riders and drivers, and may be illegal in some jurisdictions. This guide covers the full aiming procedure for J.W. Speaker motorcycle LED headlights.

Before You Start

Make sure you have:

  • A flat, level surface to park on
  • A flat vertical wall with at least 7.5 meters (25 feet) of clear space
  • Chalk, tape, or a marker to mark the wall
  • A screwdriver for the vertical adjustment screw

⚠️ Important: The motorcycle must be fully loaded — with the rider seated in the normal riding position — before taking any measurements. An unladen bike sits higher and will produce an inaccurate aim.

Step-by-Step Aiming Procedure

Step 1 — Position the Motorcycle

Park the motorcycle on a flat surface, rider seated, with the front of the headlight exactly 7.5 meters (25 feet) from a flat vertical wall.

Step 2 — Mark the Wall

Mark the wall at the exact center height of the headlight lens. This is your reference point for aiming.

Step 3 — Turn On the Headlight

Switch on the headlight on low beam. High beam is not used for aiming.

Step 4 — Check the Beam Position

Look at where the beam hits the wall. The top of the brightest part of the beam — called the cutoff line — should sit at or slightly below your marked reference point.

Cutoff Line Position Action Required
At or just below the mark ✅ Correctly aimed — no adjustment needed
Above the mark ⬇️ Aim too high — adjust down
Well below the mark ⬆️ Aim too low — adjust up

Step 5 — Adjust if Needed

Use the headlight's vertical adjustment screw to raise or lower the beam until the cutoff line sits correctly. Re-check against the wall mark after each adjustment.

Horizontal Adjustment

Horizontal aiming varies by motorcycle model and is not adjustable on all bikes. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for horizontal aiming procedures specific to your make and model.

Adaptive Headlight Models

💡 Note for Adaptive 2 Series owners (Models 8690, 8790): The adaptive cornering fill-in behavior is fully automatic and controlled by on-board lean angle sensors. It cannot be manually adjusted and does not need to be aimed — only the primary beam position requires adjustment using the steps above.
